Well, dear readers, my time has come to an end as intern at ADK Heritage Law. In the beginning, I aimed to make these posts as accessible and straightforward as possible for anyone interested in estate planning, whether you are someone with a legal background or not. Maybe now you know what to do about your pets, or why having a plan for your adult children is important. Most of all, I sincerely hope I could be of help to you in some way. Read on for my personal reflection on my internship experience, and for one last observation that applies to everyone, including you.
This summer, my goal was to decide whether or not I wanted to attend law school after I finish my bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley. I was lucky enough to find ADK Heritage Law, a small but clearly polished (I mean, check out this website) estate planning firm right here in Ventura County. Amy, our principal attorney, very generously offered me an internship, and I eagerly accepted. I’ve learned so much, not only about estate planning as a field of law, but also just about how a law office functions. The glamour you see in shows like Law & Order might not be the reality, but the satisfaction after a job well done and the genuine attorney-client relationships truly are. It’s all about people, really. Helping them with things that are complicated, costly, and emotionally draining. The professionals at ADK Heritage Law care, and they’ve inspired me to pursue a legal career where I, too, can take all this care I have for the world and put it to use.
With all that said, my last piece of advice for you all is simple: don’t procrastinate. I know, I know - that’s easier said than done. But check out this example: at the start of the year, a client came into ADK Heritage Law and we helped him put together an estate plan. Fewer than 6 months later, he passed away. Death isn’t planned, and you never know when it might happen. So, although overcoming procrastination is difficult, you just gotta do it. Force yourself to schedule an appointment. Do it now, early, before something happens, so no one will have to worry about it later. Just because there’s not a set deadline doesn’t mean the deadline doesn’t exist. As I tell myself when I’m putting off school assignments, finishing early saves you from stress later on.
To finish this off, I want to thank everyone who’s read my posts and everyone who’s left a Facebook like or comment at the bottom. Knowing that people are actually reading what I write, even if it’s only a few, means the world to me. I also want to thank Amy, Kristi, Caryn, and Kerry - ADK Heritage Law’s finest - for all the support, encouragement, and opportunities they gave me this summer.
Signing off for the last time,
Nicki
